5 Ideas for Spicing Up Your Powder Room

Source

Powder room, water closet, half-bath — whatever you call it, this small space presents the perfect opportunity to get adventurous with your design. While it’s true that I tend to keep the colour palette and style cohesive throughout an entire home when designing it, between you and me, the powder room is the exception! Why?

  1. You need less material, so you can splurge on more expensive options while still staying in-budget.

  2. As a low-traffic space, you can opt for high-maintenance materials that might not be practical in other areas of your home (like marble counters or a glass vessel sink).

  3. Bold colours, patterns, or textures won’t feel overwhelming in small doses.

  4. You can create a space that feels like an unexpected and exciting experience — the “jewel box” of the home!

There are so many beautiful design options out there, and so much joy to be found just outside your comfort zone. For example, a bright teal backsplash (like the one above) may feel too daring for your kitchen, but it could be perfect for a new powder room that makes you smile every time you walk in.

Today, I’m sharing 5 creative ideas for spicing up your powder room, along with tips you’ll need along the way. But before you dive in, remember this: only ONE element should be your focal point, whether it’s a bold wallpaper, glittering light fixture, or show-stopping tiles. Then, everything else in the space should support but not compete with that focal point.

So… which will you choose?

Idea 1. Wall-Mounted Faucet

Wall-mounted faucets are common in the bathtub area, but they are quickly becoming a popular sink faucet installation option, too. Wall-mounted faucets make a statement, and I personally love that this method blends with all design styles, from traditional to modern, so you can’t go wrong.

Another great benefit? This installation option is quite practical as well. It leaves more counter space free, which is at a premium in powder rooms (especially if the standard 22” vanity doesn’t fit). Plus, the faucet isn’t blocking the counter area behind the sink, making it easier to clean.

Idea 2. Fun Colour, Pattern, & Texture

Bring the drama! While I don’t always suggest something dramatic for your main living areas (as it may become tiresome quickly), a powder room isn't used as often. You can enjoy bold, colourful designs when you want and close the door when you don’t. Your guests will also love being surprised by the special, custom touch.

As for implementation, you can infuse colour into your powder room in a variety of ways, such as bold wallpaper, a fun patterned tile, dramatic wall colour, or a vanity with a beautiful wood stain that contrasts with the rest of the cabinetry in the house. The options are endless. I highly recommend finding something that really speaks to you and brings you joy — or work with me, and we’ll discover this together.

Idea 3. Float Your Sink

Since the powder room isn’t used as often as larger bathrooms, there is little need for storage, which means you’re unlikely to require a full vanity in this space. A floating vanity is a fun alternative. It’s wall-mounted, leaving the floor space free underneath and creating the illusion of having more space. I also love the idea of a floating sink because it is an unexpected feature that you wouldn’t necessarily use in your other bathrooms.

Bonus? Add under-cabinet motion sensor lighting, so when guests enter the bathroom, they don’t have to search for the light switch in the dark.

Idea 4. Upcycle a Vintage Dresser

If you’re looking for something with more charm, consider using a vintage dresser as a vanity. It’s unique, creative, and unforgettable. This vintage option is possible when you modify the dresser drawers to fit the plumbing components under the sink.

To find a vintage dresser that will work for this, you’ll need it to be 33”-36” tall. If it’s too short, you can also add a vessel sink to gain a few inches of height. Or, remove the top of the dresser and replace it with beautiful quartz or marble and an under-mount sink. This also ups the character factor!

Idea 5. Layers of Lighting

I always describe lighting as the room’s jewelry, adorning the space with sparkle and light. Most bathrooms usually have a standard vanity bar light, but if you have read this far, I know you’re interested in doing something special and different. Here’s what I suggest to really make this space pop:

  • Wall sconces for a softer light

  • Pendant lighting for a great ambiance

  • LED-backlit mirrors with adjustable colour tones (adds depth and wow-factor for guests!)

  • Nondescript recessed can light over the toilet (to not compete with the stylish lighting in the room)

  • Lights on a dimmer for an easily adjustable ambiance

Pro Tip: Integrate your sconces or pendants with dimmer switches that are independent of the recessed or flush mount light over the toilet area. This way, you can turn the vanity area lights on before guests arrive, so they aren’t walking into a dark room, and if they need more light, they can add it.

The Finishing Touches

The finishing touches are what soften a powder room and make you and your guests feel at home when you walk in. Style this special space with pretty towels, scented soaps, candles, a colourful carpet runner, and/or an intriguing piece of art.

There you have it — 5 ideas for spicing up your powder room. In my opinion, these are all fantastic options for creating a memorable space for your home and guests. But in the end, the choice is yours. Which idea piqued your interest the most?
