Everything You Need to Know About Cell Shades
If purchasing new window coverings are on your to-do list for this year you may be overwhelmed by the options and knowing which is right for you. Cell or cellular shades are fast becoming the most popular window coverings but what is it that makes cell shades so popular? Let’s take a look at everything I love about cellular shades.
What Are Cell Shades?
Cell shades are window coverings also called cellular shades. You may also know them as honeycomb shades. That’s because they’re designed as pleated fabric cells that expand and contract when they’re raised and lowered. The collection of cells together forms what looks like a small honeycomb from the side.
Why I Love Cellular Shades
1/ Narrow Profile
Cell shades have a very narrow profile meaning that when viewed from the side they are slim and sleek. This is an advantage in spaces that are small because they don’t intrude on the space around the window.
2/ Insulate Your Space
Both hot and cold air become trapped in the cells as they enter the home and help regulate your interior temperature. The insulating factor means that you can keep drafts from entering your space and this in turn makes your home more energy efficient.
3/ Designs That Work In Your Space
Cell shades come in a wide variety of colours and fabrics so it’s always easy to find a shade that works in your space. There’s a variety of both light and dark colours but they tend towards neutral colour choices.
4/ Sound Absorption
If you’ve ever been in a room that echoes you’ll understand how important fabric is to sound absorption. Anytime we install window coverings in our homes we allow some of that sound to be absorbed by the fabric and reduce the noise. This is a wonderful benefit of cell shades as the layers of fabric are great at reducing unwanted sounds in the room.
5/ Room Darkening
In spaces like bedrooms where you really want to keep the light out, cell shades are a great choice. They offer more effective room darkening than many other window coverings because the fabric follows the width of the headrail. The result is less light leaking in from gaps at the side as compared to other window coverings like roller shades. This is perfect for those who like to sleep in a very dark room without the sun peeking through the window coverings in the morning.
What To Consider When Buying Cell Shades
Aside from my interior design business I also own and operate a business selling and installing window coverings in Cranbrook and surrounding areas. I am often asked what needs to be considered when selecting cell shades and after many years in business these are the factors I think are the most important to consider:
Light Filtering
How much light do you want your shades to filter? This will depend on the room and the requirements of the space. If you’re installing blinds in a bedroom you may want to consider blackout material that will block out the light and allow you to sleep
If your office window overlooks your neighbour’s home you might prefer a transparent fabric that will filter the light and obscure the view. The most important factors to consider are how much privacy you need as well as how much light you want to allow into your space.
Control Mechanisms
How the cell shade operates is another important decision you’ll be making. When purchasing a cellular shade you’ll need to decide from the following:
1/ Top Down, Bottom Up -. In an effort to eliminate safety risks for children, Canada changed their regulations regarding manufacturing of blinds in 2022 and this affects cell shades. You can no longer purchase the older style of top down, bottom up blinds that were so popular. Instead, the top portion is now covered with a sheer fabric that encases the cords. This offers all the benefits along with integrating the new safety standards.
2/ Automated via Remote Control or Bluetooth - this is as easy as clicking a button and the blind will be raised or lowered automatically. You can also control the light filtering to make adjustments as the light changes throughout the day. Want to make it even easier? Bluetooth technology is integrated in cell shades so that you can operate all the functionality through the bluetooth on your phone.
3/ Corded - the regulations mentioned above also affect the way corded shades can be manufactured. There is still the option to operate a blind using a cord but the cord must be covered with a plastic shroud to protect children and animals from getting tangled up in the cords.
Fabric Options
Your design aesthetic and your style will guide you when it comes to selecting fabric for cell shades. If you tend towards a modern or transitional style you may prefer a simple neutral that works harmoniously with the colour of your window trim.
If you prefer a bolder design style you may want to select an accent colour or a strong texture that stands out and highlights the window. This is also a nice way to draw attention to a beautiful view outside your window.
Getting The Size Right
One of the reasons I always encourage homeowners to bring in a window covering consultant is because sizing and measuring for window treatments can be tricky. It’s most definitely a job for the experts.
The largest size available in a cell shade is 96” but sometimes multiple shades make more sense than a single, large shade. For example, your window may include a fixed glass panel in the centre with windows that open on either side. In this case I would recommend installing 3 separate shades. This allows you to open a single shade and allow air to flow into the room as opposed to having all of the shades open.
It’s also possible to have 2 separate shades on a single headrail. This is ideal for sliding windows or patio sliders because you can operate the shades independently and partially block sunlight while allowing traffic to flow in and out of the house.
Vertical Cell Shades
When it comes to patio doors it’s worthwhile considering a different option. There is a vertical cell shade called GlideView which is made to accommodate sliding doors and French doors. They open and close from the side to allow easy access to the door.
If you loved the convenience of the standard vertical blinds from the 80’s but want an updated look with more functionality, you’ll love this option.
Windows That Don’t Benefit From Cell Shades
I recommend avoiding using cell shades in areas where they could be exposed to water. Kitchens and bathrooms aren’t ideal areas for these because splashing water (and grease in the kitchen) can damage the fabric of the blind.
Measuring and Installation
It’s so important that the measuring and installation of cellular shades be done by a professional. If you accidentally measure incorrectly you may find yourself with a blind that can’t be installed or returned.
It’s always advisable to have an expert visit your home for a site measure and then return once the blinds have been manufactured and install them for you.
Cleaning and Care
You’ll want your cell shades to look their best for many years so regular maintenance is important. You can dust the shades regularly with a soft cloth or you can use the brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner.
For stain removal you can spot clean using a mild detergent and water. It’s best to avoid any harsh chemical cleaners as it can damage the fabric.
Working With Me
I’ve been installing cell shades and various other window coverings for over 6 years which means I’ve learned a ton and am constantly improving my business.
My current cell shade fabric library includes about 135 different fabrics including room darkening, translucent and sheer options. There are a variety of colours and textures and there are even a few fabrics offering a pattern for those who want to add some additional visual interest to their shades.
All the blinds that I specify are made in Medicine Hat in Alberta and the manufacturing time is approximately one month from the time the order is placed.
If you’re interested I’d be happy to book a consultation and help you decide which type of window covering is best for your space. I offer a 2-hour consultation and during this time we’ll discuss the best options for your space as well as fabric options and functional needs. I also take measurements in order to be able to provide you with the most accurate quote so you can decide whether you want to move ahead. If you’d like more information please review my Window Covering Advisory service.
